Hockey is a contact sport and like all contact sports has a risk of injury. As part of our teams safety awareness all players are required to take the ImPACT Baseline test prior to playing their first game. This testing can then be used as one of several diagnostic tools by physicians assessing a player with concussion symptoms. A link to the site is below.

USA Hockey has provided coaches with many tools to develop player checking skills. Checking is a skill and needs to be practiced like all skills. The like below is a model off ice practice plan. Our team will incorporate parts of this to our off ice sessions. Please review it and use it on your own. In short, players that struggle with these drills will have a more difficult time with on ice drills.

Eric Lickteig Eric Lickteig, a native of Sault. Ste. Marie Michigan has been coaching youth hockey from Squirts to Midgets for 18 years. After completing three years playing JV at UMass-Lowell’s he moved to Summit County where he coached for six years. During that time he also served on the Board of Directors and was chairman of the Coaching Committee and helped bring the program into the Colorado Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA) and compete in the Mountain & Plains League. In 2003 Eric made his first of three trips abroad as a coach and chaperone with the Vail International Hockey group. These trips have included games in Eastern Europe and China requiring games be played under the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) rules. Eric earned his Master, Level 5 certification with USA Hockey in 2002 and became an instructor for USA Hockey’s Coaching Education Program (CEP) in 2004 serving the certification needs in the mountain region. This summer he attended the USA Hockey required re-certification with the CEP revamp and roll out of the American Development Model (ADM).

Eric moved to the Vail Valley in 1998 and continued working through the coaching ranks for twelve years. During those years, three teams have made the Colorado Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA) state tournament, one was undefeated in league play and several others appeared in Continental Divide Youth Hockey (CDYHL) play off finals.
