2009-2010 Season Recap

The 09/10 campaign was a building year for Vail Eagle Hockey Association at the Pee Wee A division. The team only returned two players from last season’s squad. The core was filled with players from last years Pee Wee B team and a few players from the Squirt division were able to step onto a fast team.

The season started slow in the Continental Divide Youth Hockey League with most games scheduled in the second half of the season. Two of our first five games were against the Greely Renegades, a fast team that would prove to be a state contender in CAHA.

With fewer games in the seasons start, parents selected a few extra tournaments to attend and achieve game experience. We showed strong in the Vail Sportsmanship Tournament but a 1-0 loss to Littleton in pool play was enough to keep us from the Championship game. In an early December tournament at Denver University we placed second. And our run at the championship game of the Colorado Cup in early January was quashed by tie break rules.  These tournaments helped team play and unity with players believing they could compete with any team in the state.

As the season ran into February, the team clawed their way over Steamboat Springs in the last game of the season on Steamboat’s home ice to finish second in the CDYHL. The resort rivalry would continue in to the playoffs. After receiving a wake up call loss to Steamboat it would take an overtime win to place the Mountaineers in the CDYHL championship game against the Renegades. The Renegades continued their dominance in our division and we ended the playoffs in second place.

Time will tell the true success of the season as much of the team will be moving up to the Bantam division next season. Goals set early were to achieve a CDYHL record of 500 or above. The second was to peak at playoff time and dig into the CDYHL Play Off Championship game. Both of these goals were reached and that enabled us to advance to the CAHA Cup (Colorado state play offs) in March. Despite playing one of the teams best games of the season, we lost in the semi finals to Littleton Red (same team from the Vail Sportsmanship Tournament). The bitter sweet about making playoffs is that unless your team wins ii all, the season will end on a loss. The team ended with a CDYHL record of 6-6-4 and an overall record of 20-9-7

Player Notes:
Crane Mcguckin – Captain
Tanner Crisofulli - MVP
Mile Petterson – Ranked second in CDYHL with a .897 save percentage, 2 shut outs and a 53 save game against Renegades.
Connor Dalbow – Solo goal in CAHA semi final game, teams only hat trick.

Player Safety

All Pee Wee A players are required to complete the brain and behavior baseline testing prior to the first game on October 24th. This test will give a baseline for your child that can assist doctors in the diagnoses of a concussion or other head injury. Please confirm your child has been tested.

In addition please review the dry land checking drills (under the Pee Wee Drills Section) we will incorporate into this year’s practices. Please review these with your child to better understand the proper technique and the development progression for the coming season.

As the season progresses it is essential to keep the coaching staff informed of all health or injury issues regarding your child. Players need to inform the coaches of injuries. Parents need to inform coaches about injuries because the player may not have. Any of our highly appreciated, medically trained parents that are consulted about player injuries need to inform coaches.  Coaches need to know about lingering health and injury issues to properly supervise and protect players.
